Ephesians 4:11-13
“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
Apostles- walked with Jesus
Prophet – Preacher (gift of prophecy).
Evangelist. Only mentioned 3 times.
- Ephesians 4:11
2. Acts 21:8 – “Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven.” (Acts 6, waiter on tables, full of the Spirit and wisdom).
3. 2 Timothy 4:5 – “But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.”
– Do the work of a good news preacher!
– Discharge the duties of servitude
– Not to say you don’t work
What’s the Evangelist role? It’s a verb.
To preach and plant “churches” by sharing the good things (the news of Christ).
Ephesians 4:
Apostles, prophets, evangelist, shepherds, teachers.
Purpose of leadership:
We all reach unity in the faith, maturity, equipped for works of service!
Pastor/shepherd & teacher.
Watch over the flock – teach doctrine, preach.Requirements to be a pastor or teacher?
Titus 1:5-9
“An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe[b] and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. 7 Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. 8 Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. 9 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.”
1 Timothy 3:1-7
“Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[a] respect. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.”
1 Peter 5:1-4
“To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.”
Who has the right to lead in Gods church?
Does your evangelist fit these standards?
Does your shepherd?
Does your leader fit the requirements of the NT standards?
What about Women’s minsitry leaders? What should they be teaching?
Titus 2:3-5
“Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.”
– Not corporate America!
– Teaching women how to be at home- home guards!
– Love their husbands.
– Love their kids-not farming them out to nanny’s of all nations. – Women, raise your own kids!
– Where’s the Husband? He’s Working!
1 Timothy 5:8 Aramaic Bible in Plain English
“For if a man does not take care of those who are his own, especially those who are members of the household of faith, this one has renounced the faith and is worse than those who are unbelievers!!!”
Leaders in ministry getting paid:
1 Timothy 5:17-21
“17The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” a and “The worker deserves his wages.” b 19Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. 20But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove before everyone, so that the others may take warning. 21I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.”
– Plural “elders”. Role was preaching & teaching.
– Give them an “honorarium” (compensation) Leaders can get paid to work in the ministry.
– Not by you demanding people give a certain amount, but by people wanting to give! Look at Paul’s heart on the topic:
1 Corinthians 9:11-17
“If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more?
But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ. 13 Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? 14 In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel. 15 But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me, for I would rather die than allow anyone to deprive me of this boast. 16 For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. 18 What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights as a preacher of the gospel.”
– Rather die that let anyone take away this boast!
– No guarantee to get a donation; to be full time. If no donations, making tents and then preach!
– What do I do? Preach the word because I am compelled!!!
– Or are you preaching for a paycheck?!
– Is that why you won’t say the things you need to say, because you’re scared of losing a job!
– You’re scared to rock the boat because if you preached the Bible unfiltered, you might lose your paycheck.
– If so, You’ve been bought not with the blood of Christ but with Benjamin’s…
– You can not serve both God and money!
Acts 20:33-35
“I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. 34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. 35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
– Never heard a paid minister use this scripture correctly; In context!
– Always asking others to be more blessed by others giving and him receiving!!!
– Did NOT covet silver or gold. Definition of Covet: “to have a desire for, long for”
– So many ministers are just “give, give, give”….
2 Corinthians 8:20-21
“20We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. 21For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.”
– Administer In Greek: to minister i.e. supply food and necessities of life! https://www.blueletterbible.org/lexicon/g1247/kjv/tr/0-1/
– Not a collection for the evangelists!
– Not first class flights for an Evangelist’s health!!!
– I have to ask: What type of sickness do you need to get in order to have a doctor prescribe 1st class plane tickets?
– that was a shepherds response as to why their leader in the church needed first class tickets.
Paul knew what it was like to have plenty and be in want.
Philippians 4:11-13
“I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances. 12I know how to live humbly, and I know how to abound. I am accustomed to any and every situation—to being filled and being hungry, to having plenty and having need. 13I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.b”
– Does your preacher? Has he ever experienced “want” for the sake of the gospel? – How about your World Sector Leader? Your central leader?
– If not, you need to find yourself a new preacher.
– That is, if you want a preacher like in the Bible.
Evangelist that don’t have the money… it’s time for another 30xer missions contribution!!!!! Just command your people to give 20 more dollars each week!
– No! Stop being a leach, “give me give me” – time to get a job and make some tents!
– Stop robbing God’s people!!!!
– If you preach Gods word; considered a prophet!
Matthew 11:8-9
“what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothing are found in kings’ palaces. 9What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.”
Matthew 3:4
“4John wore a garment of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.”
Who wants to be a prophet now?
Many are like the false teachers of Matthew 23:
Matthew 23:4-6
“4They tie up heavy, burdensome loadsa and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. 5All their deeds are done for men to see. They broaden their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. 6They love the places of honor at banquets, the chief seats in the synagogues, 7the greetings in the marketplaces, and the title of ‘Rabbi’ by which they are addressed.b”
Matthew 8:20
“Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
2 Corinthians 8:9
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.”
Jesus was Born in a barn, and died on a cross. Who wants to be a prophet now?
Problem today many want to be kings, not prophets!
